Apologetics 101: Saint Therese of Lisieux

The Church celebrated the feast of Saint Therese of Lisieux on October 1. She is famous for her “Little Way” which is a sure and certain way of advancing in holiness.

There is more to the ‘Little Way’ of Saint Therese than doing little things with great love. That is part of it. But it is not the only part. Doing little things with great love comes from a childlike sense of trust in God. A childlike soul knows she cannot do anything great on her own, so instead she focuses only on being little and small and childlike.

Everything, for Saint Therese, depends on having childlike simplicity and trust in God. In fact, the actual name of her spirituality is “the Little Way of Spiritual Childhood.” She writes: “To remain little is to recognize one’s nothingness, to expect everything from God, as a little child expects everything from his father.”

Children do not compares themselves to others. This only happens after we have been hurt and wounded or innocence has lost. Saint Therese accepted herself as she was with her imperfections, striving for holiness in that way God intended for her and not for anyone else.

The Little Way begins with spiritual childhood and then leads to doing little things with great love.
