  RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Sister Lucy Scata, CSJ, Director
(203) 272-6504

Religious education is a process that we hope will lead us to recognize that we are on a journey that begins, for most of us, as children with the Sacrament of Baptism and continues through adulthood until the moment we pass from this earthly existence to eternal life in the Lord.  Religious education can help us to understand that this growing in faith is for everyone, that included in this process are sacramental preparation and the RCIA, adult faith enrichment and spirituality, classes for children in their faith, youth ministry, etc.  To form someone in the faith is a lifetime undertaking; it does not end when there are no more religion classes offered.

Baptismal Preparation Program:
Baptism is a sacrament of Welcome. At this time we begin our life of faith when our lives are joined to Jesus, and the Church welcomes us as new members.  Parents, who desire the Sacrament of Baptism for their children, must attend pre-Baptism preparation classes.  Expectant parents may attend anytime before the child is born.
Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD):

Religious education classes are offered at St. Bridget School and local area schools for children from age 3 to grade 12.  Children receive First Reconciliation and First Eucharist in grade 3, and Confirmation in grade 10.  Preparation for these sacraments involves 2-3 years of specialized instruction.

Pre-school, kindergarten, and some additonal grades attend classes at St. Bridget School on Sunday morning during the 9:00 mass.  Grades 1-4 attend classes at local area public schools on Monday afternoon after dismissal. Classes for grades 5 & 6 are held at St. Bridget School on Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and Grades 7 & 8 atttend classes at St. Bridget School on Monday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Catholic Youth Organization (CYO):
This program includes preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Students in grades 9 & 10 attend two Sunday evening classes per month.  One class is conducted at the home of a host couple with at least two confirmed peer facilitators (students in grades 11 & 12) for study and discussion.  The other class is conducted at St. Bridget School led by volunteer adult instructors.
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA):
This is a process which welcomes new members into the Roman Catholic Church and brings uncatechized Catholics into full communion with the Church.

For additional information about any of these programs, please contact the Religious Education office for additional information and class times
